{"id":24,"date":"2012-01-31T10:06:06","date_gmt":"2012-01-31T18:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joshvolk.com\/blog\/?p=24"},"modified":"2014-11-12T07:15:19","modified_gmt":"2014-11-12T15:15:19","slug":"repost-rye-vetch-and-fava","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joshvolk.com\/?p=24","title":{"rendered":"repost &#8211; rye, vetch and fava"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"id1\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Continuing with reposts from the original blog, here&#8217;s one I made just before leaving <a title=\"Sauvie Island Organics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sauvieislandorganics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sauvie Island Organics<\/a> and starting <a title=\"Slow Hand Farm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slowhandfarm.com\/Welcome.html\" target=\"_blank\">Slow Hand Farm<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s all still true and it connects with something I was reading last night in Fukuoka&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"One Straw Revolution\" href=\"http:\/\/www.onestrawrevolution.net\/One_Straw_Revolution\/One-Straw_Revolution.html\" target=\"_blank\">One Straw Revolution<\/a>.&#8221; \u00a0In his chapter &#8220;Toward a Do-Nothing Farming&#8221; Fukuoka says, &#8221; The usual way to go about developing a method is to ask &#8220;How about trying this?&#8221; or &#8220;How about trying that?&#8221; bringing in a variety of techniques one upon the other.&#8221; \u00a0When I talk about farming bringing\u00a0me a little understanding of how we got where we are today, it&#8217;s that layering that I&#8217;m talking about.<\/p>\n<p>Fukuoka goes on to explain his approach, which is to ask &#8220;How about <em>not<\/em>\u00a0doing this? November 21, 2007<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of nice to just sit here and write a little.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had a lot of ideas lately about farming, food, what I want to do.\u00a0 I guess that\u2019s where thinking about the next step will get you.\u00a0 With an imminent departure from the farm, that\u2019s kind of where I\u2019m at right now.\u00a0 Most of my spare time is going to putting together numbers, trying to make crop plans work, trying to write a business plan that makes sense &#8211; oh, and trying to find a little paying work as well for the near future.\u00a0 What a lesson in business though.<\/p>\n<p>Farming has been an incredible teacher for me.\u00a0 I feel like I\u2019ve gone through a course in the evolution of civilization that brings me a little understanding of how we got where we are today.\u00a0 Maybe this was all obvious to most of you by the time you made it out of school but I feel like I\u2019m just starting to understand.<\/p>\n<p>After spending the summer putting together little structures around the farm, the incredible details of architecture and the evolution of buildings makes a lot more sense.\u00a0 After spending years producing vegetables on a small scale and looking at improving efficiencies, large scale agriculture, even the decisions that lead to conventional agriculture makes more sense.\u00a0 Trying to put together a business plan for a new farm enterprise makes business, the world of finance, and lawyers make a lot more sense to me.<\/p>\n<p>It all makes more sense how we\u2019ve gotten here, but it doesn\u2019t make me feel like this was necessarily the best path.\u00a0 It\u2019s the place we\u2019re at, so I\u2019ll take it as it is, but there sure are a lot of improvements that could be made.\u00a0 I see decisions that have been made, and reasons why they were made, but I also see the problems that have come out of those decisions and conditions and pitfalls that were ignored along the way.<\/p>\n<p>My life is probably just like that, maybe everyones is but like I said, I\u2019m just figuring these things out now.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to make the best decisions, predict the future by looking at the present and past and seeing what worked.\u00a0 With a little luck this rye, vetch and fava that has come up beautifully on the farm will, make it through the winter and\u00a0 provide the fertility for next season\u2019s crop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing with reposts from the original blog, here&#8217;s one I made just before leaving Sauvie Island Organics and starting Slow Hand Farm. \u00a0It&#8217;s all still true and it connects with something I was reading last night in Fukuoka&#8217;s &#8220;One Straw Revolution.&#8221;
